I’ve been asked on Twitter what was the best Music add-on for Kodi. I had no clue. I decided to find out. Search is over (for now) and it is time for me to tell you what I think are the best Kodi add-ons for music streaming.

Kodi add-ons for music streaming

Paid version of Kodi add-ons for music streaming

Spotify for Kodi

When it comes to streaming, there is often two worlds. Paid content and free content. My first favorite “paid” version is an add-on based on Spotify Premium. The add-on itself is totally free, however it requires to use a paid ($10 a month) Spotify Premium account.

This add-on works pretty much like the official app, with similar menus and a convenient search function. Check the pictures below to get a better idea of what I am talking about.

spotify home

You have access to your playlists, can explore your music (by album, artists, songs, etc.), and discover new stuff in the Explore category, and of course search…

Elijay Spotify

and this is what it looks like when listening to Elijay.

Google Music for Kodi

If you are using Google Music, solutions exist… probably. Believe it or not, I have been trying a bunch of unofficial add-ons. None of them work out of the box and it is really bugging me… Honestly, I am giving up. If i have to fix a lot of stuff by myself, I don’t want to explain you how long and boring it will be for you to do it. In the end, it will make the choice easier.

Here is a little summary of what I tried.

From SuperRepo, Google Music Dev, entered my credentials (with the “app” password feature from Google), didn’t work. Got on error telling me to check the log, then in the log… too many output, no clear error messsage. Probably something related to an outdated add-on, no longer working.

From Kodi official forums, I tried the Google Play Music from linuxwhatelse. Installed add-on from official repo, everything went fine. However, I couldn’t find any way to provide my Google Music credentials (even in the configure screen of the add-on). Hence the add-on always complaining about failed login, and the setup assistant is not firing up (keep saying “login failed). Did a quick search on internet and the thread, couldn’t find a fix (but I am not alone with this issue). Doesn’t look like it works outside of the box, I won’t talk about it any further.

Finally, I tried Google Music Experimental from Forverguest. Installed repo and add-on without any trouble. Added my credentials in the configure screen of the add-on. The add-on started directly, sent me to my Library and I could browse Tops albums :

I could also see L.E.J. songs :

Google Music LEJ

However, nothing worked. I tried several songs from several menus, none of them worked. It threw me another error, in order to check debug log. :

and debug log itself was a hell :

Quick search over internet :  I am not alone, can’t find a quick fix. I will not talk about this add-on either.

Free version

The other side of the coin, free version. As usual, one can disagree on “free” streaming, and it is probably not legal depending on where you live. However, I strongly believe we should have a right to listen for free to music and then buy what we like. One rule : you like it, you buy it.

I’ve tried quite a few free music add-ons  from SuperRepo (since it is a very convenient way to find new stuff) and have been pretty disappointed.

  • I would not recommend Youtube Music, you can’t search for anything and there is only a few songs.
  • Another add-on, Grooveshark1, just didn’t worked.
  • Spootimc, using Spotify, wants to install a whole bunch of stuff (kind of like the builds are doing). I don’t want anything like this on my computer. This is a huge red flag for me.
  • Pandoki, based on Pandora is probably dead…

Which one is the best?

To answer the initial question, which one works best on Kodi? For once, it’ll definitely be an easy answer. As of today, the best Kodi add-ons for music streaming is Spotify for Kodi.

Unfortunately, I might not have been lucky today, however those Google Music add-on look promising and I’ll check them later, hoping a fix will come soon. If it does, I’ll write about it.
